Growing Our Relationship With God
God desires an intimate relationship with you.
In a world where we are constantly occupied with work, family, responsibilities, social media, and the affairs of everyday life, it is easy for our relationship with God to become superficial. We can be busy doing things for God while barely spending time with God.
But God is calling us deeper.
He doesn’t want us to know Him only from a distance. He wants us to know Him intimately—to fellowship with Him, hear His voice, understand His heart, and walk with Him daily.
James 4:8 says, Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.
David: A Man After God’s Own Heart
The Bible describes David as a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22).
Why?
When you read the Psalms, you get a glimpse of David’s relationship with God. He didn’t only turn to God when he was in trouble. He continually sought God, talked to Him, worshipped Him, cried to Him, thanked Him, and meditated on His Word.
Psalm 63:1 says:
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you.
David’s life demonstrates what it looks like to cultivate a relationship with God throughout the day.
Psalm 55:17 says, Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.
The idea is not that David stopped everything every hour to pray. Rather, his life was continually connected to God. His heart was turned toward God throughout the day.
That is the kind of relationship God desires with us.
Going Deeper With God
There is something powerful about becoming deeply intimate with God.
The closer we draw to Him, the more we know Him—not merely about Him.
Paul prayed that believers would be rooted and grounded in love and have the strength to comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love (Ephesians 3:17–19).
God doesn’t want a surface-level relationship with us. He wants us rooted deeply in Him.
Colossians 3:2 tells us: Set your minds on things that are above, not on earthly things.
Although we live in this world, our hearts and minds are called to remain focused on God’s kingdom.
So, how do we cultivate this deeper relationship with God in the middle of our everyday lives?
Here are a few simple but powerful habits:
Dedicate Personal Time to God
Set aside a specific time each day to spend with God in His Word and in prayer.
It could be in the morning, during lunch, or in the evening. Find a time when you can be as undistracted as possible and intentionally enter His presence.
Give God more than a rushed five minutes whenever possible. Consider setting aside at least an hour each day to immerse yourself in His Word, prayer, reflection, and fellowship with Him.
Psalm 1:2 says of the blessed person:
His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
The goal isn’t simply to complete a Bible-reading routine. It is to meet with God.
- Meditate on God’s Word Throughout the Day
- Don’t leave God’s Word behind when you close your Bible.
Take a verse or truth you have read and carry it with you throughout the day. Think about it. Reflect on it. Ask yourself what God is teaching you through it and how you can live it out.
Psalm 119:97 says: Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.
Let God’s Word continue speaking to you long after your Bible study is over.
- Look for Ways to Participate in God’s Kingdom
- Ask yourself:
How can I contribute to God’s kingdom today?
Your fellowship with God should overflow into the way you interact with people.
It could be as simple as sharing a Bible verse that encourages someone, praying with someone who is struggling, encouraging a friend, offering godly counsel, serving in your church, or simply being a light wherever God has placed you.
Jesus said:
Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. — Matthew 5:16
Every day, look for an opportunity to represent Christ and contribute meaningfully to His kingdom.
- Make Worship Part of Your Day
- God is worthy of our worship—not only on Sundays, but every day.
Take a few minutes each day to sing, praise, and worship your Father. Put on a worship song and intentionally focus your heart on Him.
Psalm 22:3 says: Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you inhabit the praises of Israel.
Worship helps turn our hearts and attention back to God. It is also a beautiful way to begin your personal Bible study or quiet time with Him.
Maintaining Fellowship With God Throughout the Day
Growing closer to God doesn’t mean that you have to spend every minute in a prayer room.
It means learning to walk with Him throughout your day.
Talk to Him while you are travelling. Pray silently before making decisions. Thank Him when something good happens. Ask for His wisdom when you face a challenge. Listen for His direction. Worship Him as you work. Think about His Word as you go about your responsibilities.
Pray without ceasing. — 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Let God become part of your everyday life—not just the part of your day that you label devotion time.
A Challenge for This Week
Ask yourself:
Am I truly growing in my relationship with God, or have I become comfortable with a surface-level relationship?
What can I change today to draw closer to Him?
How can I maintain fellowship with God throughout my day, even while handling my responsibilities?
You don’t have to change everything at once.
Start somewhere.
Open your Bible.
Spend time in prayer.
Worship Him.
Meditate on His Word.
Look for opportunities to serve His kingdom.
And throughout the day, keep turning your heart back to Him.
God is calling you deeper.
Don’t settle for knowing about God when you can actually know Him.
Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. — James 4:8
